ALTERNATIVE LEARNING COMMUNITY
The Alternative Learning Community (ALC) is middle school program with mental health services provided on site by Lincoln Child Center staff. LCC works collaboratively with Oakland Unified School District to create an educational environment where all interventions focus on developing the specific coping strategies and social skills needed to develop and maintain meaningful interpersonal relationships and function safely within school and community settings.
The program implements a three-tiered approach. The first tier includes school-wide services designed to prevent maladaptive behavior and reinforce positive behavior throughout the school community. The second tier includes classroom-based services designed to prevent and/or ameliorate problems specific to each classroom. This will include teacher consultation, classroom projects and service-learning. The third tier includes a system of individualized student support individual and family therapy, life skills and self care groups, group therapy and case .
Specific goals include:
- Increasing students’ ability to succeed socially and academically at school and in the community.
- Building upon existing community-based services by encouraging active parent participation, collaboration and coordination.
- Engaging students in identifying their own skills, strengths and abilities, and helping to incorporate these into a learning environment.
- Reducing the number of disruptive incidents that lead to dismissal from the classroom or suspension from school.
